FAO supports CropLife Ghana in scaling-up their container management exercise

CropLife Ghana received funding from FAO-Ghana to scale up the container management program in 5 other regions in the country. The agreement to this program was signed by both parties between 9th October 2017 and 12th October 2017. The exercise eventually began in November 2017.

Under the program, CropLife Ghana is expected to scale up the container management activities into 5 districts in 5 regions of Ghana. The regions are Brong Ahafo, Ashanti, Western, Eastern and Volta Region. The regions for the program were selected by CropLife Ghana based on reports of irresponsible uses of pesticides received from agricultural officers and requests for intervention. However, the choice districts for the implementation exercise were selected by the Regional Directors of Agriculture in collaboration with the PPRSD and Extension officers in the respective regions based on the agricultural activities and the usage of pesticides in those districts.

The program aims to undertake these activities for its smooth implementation. These are as follows:

1.    Transportation and installation of 50 container collection bins in the farming communities in the 5 regions;

2.    Sensitization meetings with farmer bodies, district agricultural officers, district chief executives, media, etc in all 5 regions and districts for their acceptance and cooperation in the implementation of the program;

3.    Sensitization of the container management program on radio and community radios in the 5 selected districts;

4.    Training of 300 farmers and extension officers on responsible uses (including triple-rinsing and disposal of pesticide containers), distribution of training manuals and triple rinsing posters;

5.    Facilitate and capacitate relevant state and non-state actors on the need for continuous evacuation of pesticide containers from collection points in an environmentally sound manner

A total of 50 metal collection bins will be fabricated and distributed to all the selected districts as part of the program. In addition, a total of about 300 farmers and extension officers

In the implementation of the scaling-up program, CropLife Ghana will provide 1-day responsible-use training to at least 300 farmers and extension officers, and organize extensive media coverage in the respective districts. The sensitization and training components have been completed, containers bins are now being fabricated in some regions and they would be transported to the various communities for use by the farmers. CropLife Ghana, EPA and MoFA would conduct the monitoring exercises across the 5 regions in March 2018.

A successful implementation of this program will increase the collection rate of pesticide containers by about 50%.
